What Are the State Requirements for Motorcyclists in New York?

About Motorcyclists and New York Requirements

Whether you are traveling along scenic highways, exploring out-of-the-way back roads, or cruising in the city, operating a motorcycle in New York can be an adventure. For those who may be considering joining the ranks of motorcyclists in Rochester, NY, it is good to know what requirements the state has in place plus what you need regarding insurance. At Bajorek Agency Inc, our team will guide you through the requirements so that you can enjoy safe and legal driving.

Motorcycle Requirements in NY

The state requires that the person operating the motorcycle must have either a Class M (standard) or Class MJ (junior) operator’s license.

Motorcycles have a one-year registration and expire on April 30.

Inspection of the motorcycle is required once during a 12-month period at an official DMV inspection station. If you purchase a motorcycle from a dealership, it must be inspected before it is delivered. If you buy a motorcycle through a private sale, you have 10 days to have it inspected once it is registered with the state.

Operators must wear an approved helmet and eye protection. Passengers must wear an approved helmet.

When in operation on the road, the front and rear lights must be on.

Motorcycle Insurance

Before a motorcycle can legally operate on public streets, highways, or roads in Rochester, there must be liability insurance in effect. The state requires minimum liability to cover bodily injury, death benefits, property damage, and for an uninsured motorist.

Motorcyclists do not qualify for Personal Injury Protection (PIP).

You may be required to carry collision and comprehensive coverage if your motorcycle is leased or financed.

The name on the insurance policy and registration card must be the same.
